Golden Blood - 5

  1. GOLDEN BLOOD 5 - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in the book, "GOLDEN BLOOD" by Jack Williamson, published by Tamerlane Press in 1978.

This novel was first serialized in "Weird Tales" magazine starting in the April, 1933 issue. Most of the writers who wrote for the pulps in those days did not expect their stories to survive beyond the issues in which they appeared. Just as most of the artists who illustrated those pulps believed their artwork had no value after appearing in a magazine.

Those pulp writers are gone now, but I'm sure that, were they alive today they would be surprized at how many of their stories still have "life," are still being published in reprint editions today. And the pulp illustrators would be shocked at how much money their artwork is worth today.

I hope the trend to reprint good stories and good art from old pulps continues. Amid all the trash that was published then, there are gems that deserve to live. And after all, a story you have not read before is a "new" one, and works of art are timeless.

Note: I used my computer to clip and paste the giant tiger in this drawing onto a blank form to create the CD cover that you see in item No.1
